Background

bizAngels is an angel investment introduction service.

 

This service links an investor or small group of investors directly to unlisted small businesses seeking capital in exchange for direct shareholding. This type of investment is not passive like the stock exchange or a managed funds schemes. Frequently, you the investors have involvement within the company to some degree or another. 

 

The term angel investor sounds philanthropic, however bizAngels is aware that most angel investors are not and that you seek real return on investment. Most information on angel investors suggests you seek substantial returns and have high skills that are also attractive to developing businesses.

 

The angel investor activity within New Zealand has not historically been a highly visible form of investment. The contributing factors to this are that angel investors tend to work on thier own or in small groups and are very private. Another major contributing factor is that there are few mechanism for businesses to find investors or for investors to meet other potential co-investors. The current angel investment activities are reliant on personal networks and who knows who.  Our objectives are not to alter these existing behaviours, but to complement them with mechanisms to enhance the activity without breaching the privacies of investors or businesses.

 

The informal private equity market has been characterised as a giant game of hide and seek with everyone blind folded, with the participants and observers expressing concern about the invisibility of business angels and about the inefficiency (in time and money) of searching for angels or for investment opportunities (source http://www.caslon.com.au)

 

Each of the businesses we list as seeking investment has a diversity of needs to allow growth. 

 

The target markets are innovative businesses which have potential to grow, and wish to grow.

 

Registration Process

 

Registration is required as an Investor:

bizAngels works under a Securities Act (Venture Capital Schemes) Exemption Notice 2008.  This means that all investors who wish to invest directly in businesses that have been registered with bizAngels must be registered under this scheme before we are able to release details of businesses to you for consideration.

 

There are several schemes like bizAngels throughout New Zealand. We all work slightly differently and target different types of businesses and localities through different processes.

 

The registration process for investors is simple and will not take more than five minutes to complete. In contrast the investment process for businesses is much more complex and time consuming.
