We want to lift the capability and capacity of the Retail and Service Sectors through increased productivity and the expansion of job opportunities. One of the ways we see this being achieved is by working collaboratively with key players of the Business Improvements Districts (BIDS) and tourism businesses. The retail sector is one of the most critical elements of the national economy.

manufacturing and service sectors. Retail growth has been strong relative to the rest of the economy and is responsible for nearly one in every five employees in New Zealand (NZ Stats).
Auckland’s retail trade industry is healthy and expected to grow moderately during the next three to five years. The main influences on Auckland’s retail trade industry are population and tourism levels, which are increasing. A further trend affecting the industry is the trend towards convenience shopping, which is leading to a growing number of malls, department stores and mega-centres in the region.
Within the service sector, the trade, restaurants and hotels sector has been growing, with rising domestic incomes and strong tourism growth underpinning activity. The services sector is an increasingly important source of job creation and wealth. Accommodation, restaurants and hotels, have continued to enjoy relatively strong growth, benefiting from continued growth in international visitor arrivals as well as the trend for households to eat out more frequently.
